Ello. My name is Josh and I’m a journalist from Australia. I used to be an economics editor at The Conversation and made a couple of award winning radio shows about technology and economics.

I’ve been experimenting with a new kind of journalism. Melding programming and automation to not only gather data and create self-fulfilling news hooks, but also deliver information in new ways. I want to play with different dimensions of truth, especially salience.

This started with algorithmic newsletters that synthesise the news. I’ve moved on to scraping web data and building sensors to track pollution and climate change. I’ve created twitter bots to hammer salience and interactive charts to visualise trends. And I’m constantly experimenting with more.

Otherwise, this blog is mostly a result of my reading too much and penchant for thinking aloud. Also my scribbling, photos and other experiments.

If you’d like to get in contact my details are at the bottom of the page.
